Direct Hire vs. Direct Placement Staffing: What Employers Need to Know

If you’ve started conversations with staffing agencies, you’ve probably encountered the terms “direct hire” and “direct placement”. They’re often used interchangeably — and they do refer to the same core concept — but it’s worth understanding exactly what the arrangement means and how it compares to other hiring options.

What Is Direct Hire (Direct Placement) Staffing?

In a direct hire or direct placement arrangement, a staffing agency recruits, screens, and presents candidates to an employer — but the candidate is hired directly onto the employer’s payroll from day one. There is no temporary period; the individual becomes your employee immediately upon acceptance of the offer.

The agency earns a placement fee, typically a percentage of the hire’s first-year salary, in exchange for sourcing and delivering a qualified candidate.

How It Differs from Temporary and Temp-to-Hire

Understanding the distinction helps employers choose the right arrangement for each role:

  • Temporary staffing: The worker is employed by the staffing agency and assigned to your facility. You pay the agency, not the worker directly. Best for short-term or variable needs.
  • Temp-to-hire: Starts as a temporary assignment with the intent to convert the worker to a permanent employee after a defined evaluation period. Reduces hiring risk.
  • Direct hire / direct placement: Immediate permanent employment. Best for roles where you’re confident in the profile and want to attract candidates who won’t consider temporary work.

When Does Direct Hire Make Sense?

Direct hire is typically the right choice for skilled, experienced, or management-level roles where you need a long-term commitment from the candidate. It’s also useful when the position requires a specific license, certification, or expertise that rules out short-term arrangements.

Hamilton Connections manages all three placement types — temporary, temp-to-hire, and direct hire — so we can recommend the right structure based on the role, the market, and your organization’s needs.
